Moxa therapy, also known as moxibustion, stimulates the meridian system by applying heat to the acupuncture points. This is intended to get the body's own blocked energy “Qi” flowing again.

This is mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) wrapped in paper in the shape of a cigar about 20 cm long and 1.5 cm thick. The paper is removed at one end and the cigar is then lit with a lighter or candle. The glowing surface of the cigar is now brought up to about 1 cm away from the point to be treated until the patient feels a distinct sensation of heat, then briefly removed again. This process is repeated until the skin is clearly reddened. After use, the glow tip of the moxa cigar is simply dipped into a container filled with sand or salt to extinguish it. The rest of the cigar can then be relit at any time.

One theory put forward by Western practitioners is that the heat stimulates the nerve endings in the skin, which stimulates the pituitary gland and adrenal glands to release hormones. The heat promotes blood circulation and stimulates the metabolism. The stimulation of the body's immune system through heat stimuli is also recognized by medical professionals.

Moxa must not be used in cases of fever, acute inflammation, during menstruation, excessive nervousness or insomnia.
